Major Robert Hoops (1746–1816)
Legacy: Recognized as the first settler of Olean, NY, arriving in 1804.
Military Service: A prominent Revolutionary War officer, he served as a Brigade Major for General Philemon Dickinson and later as a Deputy Commissary-General of Issues in 1777.
Historical Note: Records indicate he was dispatched by General George Washington in December 1776 to urge General Dickinson to hasten his march and inform him of available transport boats across the Delaware River.
Burial: He died in Olean and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, though his exact grave was initially unidentified. A monument was unveiled in his memory at War Veterans Park in 1929.
