Hiram Hull enlisted at age 25 on September 28, 1861, at Ellicottville, to serve two years, and was mustered in as private, Co. I, 37th New York Volunteer Infantry, on October 9, 1861; he mustered out with his company June 22, 1863, at New York City. Hull subsequently enlisted for a second time at age 27 on March 3, 1864, at Ellicottville, to serve three years. He was mustered in as private, Co. D, 179th New York, on May 11, 1864; promoted corporal, no date; sergeant, April 1, 1865; and was mustered out with his company on June 8, 1865, near Alexandria, Virginia.⠀Postwar image courtesy of Sarah H.
